Ooltewah, TN Teacher is Awarded Teacher of the Year by American Paper & Twine, Titans Radio and Georgia-Pacific Communication Papers

December 21, 2015 (Nashville, TN) – American Paper & Twine Co., Titans Radio and Georgia-Pacific Communication Papers announced today that Dr. Gregory Kelley from Hamilton County High School was selected as Teacher of the Year for the Tennessee Titans 2015 football season.

“Our partnership with Georgia-Pacific Communication Papers and Titans Radio allows American Paper & Twine the opportunity to honor outstanding teachers during the Titans regular season,” said Karen Doochin Shaffer, Vice President of American Paper and Twine Co. “This year we searched through over a thousand submissions in support of dedicated teachers throughout the Titans Radio listening area to select our Teacher of the Week winners. At the end of the season we select a Teacher of the Year from the weekly winners, and we are proud to present Dr. Kelley with the Teacher of the Year award. His work with students who have experienced educational struggles in the past is inspirational, and we hope that this recognition will show Dr. Kelley and his students that their hard work is paying off.”

Hamilton County High School is a non-traditional school for students ages 17 to 21 years old who have fallen behind, dropped-out, or have been removed from their zoned school. Dr. Kelley was nominated by school principal, Gary Kuehn, who said “Gregory is an outstanding teacher of mathematics. He has the ability to engage his students with the energy level to keep them engaged.  He also relates and connects students to the material through real life practices and application. He sets high standards and expectations for all his students and truly believes that if they give him their attention and put in the effort to learn, he can teach any of them to be strong mathematicians.”

Principal Kuehn continued, “Dr. Kelley came to our school last year and made an immediate impact in the culture and climate of our school and the students in it and in his class. He also builds within the students the attitude that they can succeed with questions, focus and a little hard work. His data speaks for itself. He had 68 students take the state end of course Algebra II test and 66 of 68 passed the test scoring 70 or above. This might sound good but it is really great because of the struggling students that come to our school, especially in the field of mathematics.”

“Dr. Kelley’s students also credit him with helping them succeed,” said Ruth Elliott, American Paper & Twine Co. Director of Marketing. “Comments we received from students, such as ‘he never gives up on helping me if I need it, even if I feel like giving up’ and ‘I felt prepared for the state test, and also for the math class I had to face next year,’ show the impact that he is having on their confidence and their academics.”

Dr. Kelley will be presented the Teacher of the Year award and a deluxe gift basket of school supplies during the December 27th Titans game vs. the Houston Texans.
