Nashville, TN Teacher is Awarded Teacher of the Year by American Paper & Twine, Tennessee Titans and Georgia-Pacific Communication Papers

December 9, 2016 (Nashville, TN) – American Paper & Twine Co., Tennessee Titans and Georgia-Pacific Communication Papers announced today that Ms. Twjuana Williams from Maplewood High School in Nashville, Tennessee was selected as Teacher of the Year for the Tennessee Titans 2016 season.

“Our partnership with Georgia-Pacific Communication Papers and the Tennessee Titans allows American Paper & Twine the opportunity to honor outstanding teachers during the Titans regular season,” said Karen Doochin Vingelen, Vice President of American Paper and Twine Co. “This year we are honored to present Ms. Twjuana Williams this award. Her passion to teach and dedication to her students and the community make her an excellent choice for this award. Her work providing vocational skills to her students is inspirational, and we hope that this recognition will show Ms. Williams and her students that their hard work is paying off.”

Ms. Williams is the Automotive instructor at Maplewood High School. In 2015, Ms. Williams helped to coordinate a partnership with Firestone Complete Auto Care Center. The Tennessean originally reported the story where Ms. Williams said, “They could have given a scholarship, and it would have helped one kid, but they have blessed the nation basically.” Maplewood has long had an Automotive program to help teach students new skills, but the partnership with Bridgestone Americas takes the program to a new level, giving students more advanced training and certification.

According to Dr. Keely Jones-Mason, Acting Principal at Maplewood High School, “Ms. Twjuana Williams, who we affectionately call Ms. TJ, has been making dramatic differences in the lives of students, families, and the East Nashville community for almost a decade.  Ms. TJ has brought rich partnerships to the table making countless opportunities available for our students, especially with our Bridgestone Training Center allowing students to be trained, take certification exams, and to be employed by the best!  Her passion extends beyond teaching Automotive classes, she also teaches ACT prep, feeds her students daily, works after school and on weekends.  Ms. TJ never thinks of herself; she is always pouring into the lives of someone else. She cares for and nurtures teachers and administrators.  Maplewood High School is a better place because of everything that she brings to our school, students, and community!”

Mr. Paul Collins, who knows Twjuana through the Music City Antique Automobile Club, nominated her to be this year’s Teacher of the Year. “TJ is extremely excited and dedicated to the young people that come into her class. She strives to make them the best people possible. She treats them with respect and expects the same in return. If they need clothes she provides; if they are hungry she provides; if they get in trouble she is there to help. She does more than educate in the classroom; she helps them understand life outside the class,” Collins said.
